Sound as Touch: An Inquiry into Relational Resonance
Sound as Touch proposes a paradigm shift in the design of assistive technologies for individuals navigating cognitive decline or complex emotional states. Moving beyond traditional, clinical models of "monitoring" and data extraction, this research introduces an "Enriched Aesthetic Interaction" framework to develop empathetic, textile-based interfaces. By treating the human body as a geometric and resonant structure, this project utilizes the "materiality of voice"—where sonic frequency acts as a tactile anchor—to facilitate grounding and emotional regulation.
Building upon a design lineage that includes the Trans-For-M-otion and Tangible-E-M-otion series, this study employs a research-through-design methodology to synthesize haptic resonance with sensory-rich materials. The interface functions as an "empathetic companion," leveraging soft robotics and conductive textiles to translate biological stress markers into soothing, rhythmic stimuli. By integrating Laban Movement Analysis with sympathetic and conductive resonance, this work establishes a new modality for non-invasive care, transforming technology from a static instrument into a responsive, relational partner. Ultimately, this inquiry seeks to provide a dignified, sonic-based architecture for connection, honoring the individual’s lived experience and emotional security in moments where language alone can no longer resolve the challenges of the human condition.
